On January 27, the Worcester 78s defeated the New England Outtatowners 136-112 at East Sommerville Community School.
The game was highlighted by an extraordinary performance from Tony Gallo, who netted 40 points on the night. He also had 14 rebounds to attain a double-double.
Maurice Horton, Jose Cruz Jr., and Dmitri Floras also had double-doubles on the night. Horton had 15 points and 13 rebounds, Cruz had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Floras had 14 points with 10 rebounds.
Gallo began his artistry in the first quarter with a couple of nice drives in the paint using both sides of the basket to his liking. Worcester led after the first quarter 35-25.
New England tried to make something happen in the second quarter, as they scored a number of baskets with fast breaks and rebounds.
However, the 78s were too much for them to handle on this night. Gallo had an assist on Kamahl Walker three-pointer to extend the Worcester lead in the second.
In the third quarter, Avery King intercepted a New England pass and made a tremendous three-point basket from well-beyond the arc, using every muscle in his legs to ensure the ball had enough momentum to sink in the net.
Worcester shot 45.6 percent on the evening, making 47 of 103 attempted field goals. They also shot 44.7 percent from behind the arc, as they went 21 for 47.
To top it all off, Worcester was nearly perfect on their free throws. They went 24 for 28 from the foul line, which is 85.7 percent.
Worcester will be seeing New England a lot as the season winds down to its final month. Going into Saturday’s matchup, the 78s had six games remaining and half of them were against the Outtatowners.
With the win, the 78s remain perfect against the Outtatowners this season, at 4-0. Their next game will be on February 9, against the Jersey Express at the Wellness Center at Worcester State University.
